Plain Tales from the Raj Edited by Charles Allen This book relives the Anglo-India of some seventy British men and women whose lives followed its last fifty years from the carefree edwardian childhood under a blazing sun to the final loss of confidence and the twilight years of war. The Raj was, for 200 years, the jewel in the British imperial crown. Although founded on military expansionism and undoubted exploitation, it developed over the centuries into what has been called "benign autocracy" - the government of many by few, with the active collaboration of most Indians in recognition of a desire for the advancement of their country. Charles Allen's classic oral history of the period that marked the end of British rule was first published a generation ago. Reissued as the imperial century closes, the insightful and bestselling collection of reminiscences illustrates the unique experience of British India: the sadness and luxury for some; the joy and deprivation for others. Hardcover in dustjacket in VERY GOOD condition. |

Essential Haematology * Hoffbrand and Pettit
".....This book provides and account of the essential features of clinical and laboratory haematology and how manifestations of clood diseases can be explained by new knowledge of the disease processes. The text describes how advances in molecular biology, immunology, biochenistry and physiology have increased our normal understanding of normal blood cell formation and function and how they are disturbed in different diseases...." This is an excerpt from the rather lengthy blurb on the back of the book, which suggests the book is rather complete in its approach. Almost all illustrations are colour, the book is suited to students and postgrads preparing for exams in general medicine and haematology. Will also be useful for nurses and in wards and clinics dealing with blood diseased patients. Large softcover, 437 pages in VERY GOOD condition.

Port Out Starboard Home by Anna Sproule For two centuries until the arrival of air travel, the great ships - first sail, then steam - carried rich visitors and poor emigrants across the Atlantic, colonial armies to the outposts of the empire, troops to the four corners of the world. Most of the ships have now gone, and with them a whole way of life, echoed only faintly by the different conditions on today's handful of cruise liners. This book is a n affectionate and vivid illustrated tribute to the great ships and those who sailed in them : the officerrs wives on their way to the poona, the Scottish and Irish immigrants on their way to a new future, the cocktail sippers of the between the wars Atlantic crossing, the conscipted passengers of wartime. For some this book will revive memories and nostalgia |

| Good-bye Piccadilly - British War Brides in America by Jenel Virden As much of the world tried to return to normal living and working patterns after World War II, some 70,000 British women chose to be uprooted from the homeland they knew and loved. These were British war brides, a uniformly young group who by marrying American servicemen became part of the largest single group of female immigrants to the United States. Though the women came to the U.S. from all parts of the British Isles, they were an unusually homogeneous group, averaging 23 years of age, from working- or lower-middle-class families and having completed mandatory schooling to the age of fourteen. For the most part they emigrated alone and didn't move into an existing immigrant population. Jenel Virden draws on records in the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and the Public Record Office in London, as well as questionnaires and personal interviews, in relating the women's story. Virden finds that the marriages actually took place in spite of, rather than because of, the war. And, while the women benefited from special nonrestrictive immigration legislation - and found public welcomes and a good deal of favorable publicity when they arrived - they also had much in common with other immigrant groups, including a strong sense of ethnic identity. McLuhan, Marshall: Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man; "This reissue of "Understanding Media" marks the 30th anniversary (1964-1994) of Marshall McLuhan's classic expose on the state of the then emerging phenomenon of mass media. Terms and phrases such as "the global village" and "the medium is the message" are now part of the lexicon, and McLuhan's theories continue to challenge our sensibilities and our assumptions about how and what we communicate. There has been a notable resurgence of interest in McLuhan's work in the last few years, fuelled by the recent and continuing conjunctions between the cable companies and the regional phone companies, the appearance of magazines such as Wired, and the develoment of new media models and information ecologies, many of which were spawned from MIT's Media Lab. In effect, media now begs to be redefined." MIT Press Massachusetts 1994. Soft, 365 pages. Some opaque stains and light blistering at rearmost pages, suggest a little fluid damage. This is minor. Eccentric Teapot Four Hundred years of Invention - collectors reference book by Garth Clark PLEASE NOTE before reading any further, this is for the textblock only. The boards and dustjacket became damaged beyond repair. However I still feel the 'meat' of the book is still of value to the teapot collector. PLEASE be sure you understand what I mean by 'textblock only' before buying. This is 120 pages with 135 plates mostly on colour representing a truly wonderful representation of some of the most peculiar and collectable teapots. The chapter headings are: A brief history of tea; The rituals of tea; The teapot; bibliography; Acknowledgements; Index; photography credits. This textblock has a slight kink and the first few pages have a transluscent stain. Considering a normal copy of this book is difficult to get hold of in the UK and in general costs well over £20.00, this is well worth buying as it contains the same information. |

Beautifully illustrated with photographs by Fergus Bourke Softcover in VERY GOOD condition, minor signs of ownership. |

The Sociology of Knowledge by Glover and Strawbridge, series editor Haralambos. A rare book, examines concepts of time in various societies, leading to a functionalist perspective on knowledge based on Sorokin and Merton's analysis on 'social time'. Classic perspectives are examined, focusing on the work of Marx, Durkheim and Mannheim. Peter Berger's work on 'social construction of reality' is outlined with reference to ideas on modernization and consciousness. The remainder concentrates on scientific knowledge Merton is critically reviewed. The philosophy is considered, focusing on Popper and Kuhn. The final chapter looks at 'new' sociologies, discusses relativism and closes with an examination of structuralism and critical theory. Living Through the Blitz by Tom Harrison This very thorough book (at 372 pages) takes the reader through the effects of WWII at home. It is a very wide book in the sense that it goes further than the general rationing and 'make and do' mentality of some current books. At times the book concentrates on big events: Coventry, the London Blitz.. It looks at the Southern Ports and the Industrial North. Morality, The Learning Puzzle, Human Effects.... There is much here, but less of the 'romantic' notions prevalent in current books : this book is about realism. It is a hard book to find and sought after. Ex library hardcover in jacket, so expect markings and signs of use. The overall condition though is GOOD+ |
